In der Ausstellung „Who the f*ck is Halil Altindere?“ präsentiert das Kunstpalais Fotografien, Skulpturen, Objekte und Videoarbeiten des kurdischstämmigen Künstlers Halil Altindere und gibt damit einen umfassenden Einblick in sein Werk.
Als Künstler, Kurator und Herausgeber zählt Altindere zu den wichtigsten Protagonisten der zeitgenössischen Kunstszene in der Türkei.
Im kommenden Jahr ist er Mitglied der internationalen Kurzfilmjury der Berliner Filmfestspiele.
Nachdem er 2014 bereits mit seiner Videoarbeit Wonderland (2013) in der Ausstellung Affekte im Kunstpalais vertreten war, eröffnet die Einzelausstellung nun den Blick auf weitere Themen seines vielfältigen Werkes.
Erstmals wird seine jüngste Videoarbeit Angels of Hell (2014) zu sehen sein, die in Koproduktion mit dem Kunstpalais entstanden ist. Im Stil eines Actionfilms kämpft hier Gut gegen Böse, bis ein Doppelgänger des Staatsgründers Atatürk gemeinsam mit einer muskelbepackten Miss Turkey ein Treffen der Gangster sprengt.

Ausgehend von der Frage nach individueller Identität im Spannungsfeld von Moderne und Tradition, Großstadt und Provinz, Autorität und Kontrolle hinterfragt Altindere die Mechanismen des gesellschaftlichen Zusammenlebens.
Ironisch und provokant nutzt er dabei Symbolik und Sprache des Systems, das er kritisiert: So lässt er Atatürk in Dance with Taboos (1997), einer übergroßen Kopie eines türkischen Geldscheins, die Hände vor das Gesicht schlagen.
Auch seinen eigenen türkischen Ausweis als Symbol staatlicher Deutungshoheit über die Zugehörigkeit zu einer Gemeinschaft verändert Altindere und fügt ein anderes Foto von sich ein (Dance with Taboos (ID), 1997).

Inspiriert vom Alltag auf den Straßen Istanbuls lenkt Altindere in seinen jüngeren Arbeiten den Blick auf das Leben unterschiedlicher Subkulturen: In den türkischen Nationalfarben Rot und Weiß präsentiert sich selbstbewusst und stolz Miss Understood (2010), die früher einmal ein Mann war.
Der Künstler greift damit die schwierige Situation Transsexueller in der Türkei auf, die gesellschaftlich nicht akzeptiert sind und auch von staatlicher Seite benachteiligt werden.

Mit der Wachsskulptur The monument of an illegal street vendor (2012) setzt der Künstler einem Verkäufer gefälschter Designerhandtaschen ein Denkmal und damit einem weiteren Teil der Gesellschaft, dem häufig Verachtung entgegenschlägt.
Im Spiel mit Erwartungen stellen die Werke Halil Altinderes klischeehafte Vorstellungen auf die Probe und hinterfragen das Verhältnis zwischen Bürger und Autorität.
Durchaus subversiv und doppeldeutig lotet er dabei aus, welche Rolle Kunst und Künstler in diesem Zusammenhang zukommen.
Zwei bedeutende Kunstströmungen des 20. Jahrhunderts verknüpft Altindere mit seiner Herkunft als Sohn kurdischer Eltern in Fotografien seiner Mutter. In farbenfrohen Kleidern und im Schneidersitz auf bunten Kissen sitzend, zeigt er sie in My mother likes pop-art because pop-art is colorful (1998) und My mother likes fluxus because fluxus is anti-art (1998), wie sie in einem Pop Art- und einem Fluxus-Katalog liest.

Der Bezug zu historischen wie zeitgenössischen Quellen der westlichen Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte findet sich in weiteren Werken des Künstlers.
So erweitert er die von dem amerikanischen Konzept- und Medienkünstler John Baldessari zusammengestellte Liste mit Tipps, wie Kunstwerke beschaffen sein müssen, um am besten verkauft zu werden, um einige Punkte (Tips for artists who want to sell (after Baldessari), 2012).
Auf diese Weise beleuchtet er zugleich seine eigene Rolle als Künstler im System Kunstmarkt.
Begleitprogramm zur Ausstellung
Begleitend zur Ausstellung bietet das Kunstpalais ein umfangreiches Programm an.
- Erstmals werden in Kooperation mit dem Türkisch-Deutschen Solidaritätsverein Erlangen Führungen in türkischer Sprache angeboten. Für Kinder, Jugendliche und Erwachsene bieten zahlreiche Workshops die Möglichkeit, selber kreativ zu werden.
- Zum Abschluss der Ausstellung am 22. März 2015 findet in Kooperation mit ERBEŞ e. V. ein Gespräch mit Sabine Adatepe, der Herausgeberin des Buches GEZI: Eine literarische Anthologie (2014)*, statt.

In the exhibition Who the f*ck is Halil Altindere? the Kunstpalais presents photographs, sculp- tures, objects and video works by Halil Altindere and with that offers a comprehensive insight into the artist’s work.As an artist, curator and publisher Altindere is one of the most important protagonists in the contemporary art scene in Turkey. In 2015 he is member of the International Short Film Jury of the Berlin Film Festival.

In 2014 his video Wonderland (2013) was already part of the group exhibition Affekte at the Kun- stpalais. Now the solo exhibition opens a wider view on the topics in his diverse oeuvre.His new- est video work Angels of Hell (2014), which was created in co-production with the Kunstpalais, will be on show for the first time. In the style of an action movie good and evil fight until a looka- like of Atatürk together with a muscle-bound Miss Turkey blow up the gangster meeting.
Based on the question of individual identity between modernity and tradition, city and province, authority and control Altindere analyses the mechanisms of living together in a society. Ironically and provocatively he uses symbolism and language of the system that he criticises: In Dance with Taboos (1997), an oversized copy of a Turkish banknote, he lets Atatürk cover his face with his hands. As a symbol for state sovereignty of interpretation of affiliation to a community Altindere also changes his own identity card and inserts another photo of himself (Dance with Taboos (ID), 1997).
Inspired by daily life in the streets of Istanbul, Altindere in his younger works turns the gaze to the life of different subcultures: Miss Understood (2010), a former man, proudly and self- confidently presents herself in the Turkish national colors red and white. With this photograph the artist takes up the difficult situation of transsexuals in Turkey, where they are not accepted socially and also put at a disadvantage by the state. With the wax sculpture The monument of an illegal street vendor (2012) the artist memorializes a vendor of forged designer handbags and therewith another part of society that is often treated with contempt. Playing with beholder’s an- ticipations the works of Halil Altindere try stereotypical ideas and question the relationship be- tween citizen and authority. Quite subversively and ambiguously he explores the role of art and artist in this context.

In two photographs of his mother Altindere combines two important art movements of the 20th century with his own origin as a son of Kurdish parents. In My mother likes pop-art because pop- art is colourful (1998) and My mother likes fluxus because fluxus is anti-art (1998) he shows her in colourful clothes, cross-legged on multi-coloured pillows, reading a Pop Art and a Fluxus cata- logue. The reference to historical as well as contemporary sources of western art and culture is to be found in other works by the artist as well. In Tips for artists who want to sell (after Baldessari) (2012) for example he expands John Baldessari’s list with criteria how an artwork should be com- posed to be sold for the best price. Altindere in this way also reflects his own role as an artist in the art market system.
Accompanying the exhibition the Kunstpalais presents a broad programme for children, teenag- ers and adults. In cooperation with the Türkisch-Deutscher Solidaritätsverein Erlangen the Kun- stpalais offers guided tours in Turkish for the first time. Workshops for all age groups give the possibility for creative working. Concluding the exhibition on March 22, 2015 a talk with Sabine Adatepe, editor of the book Gezi: Eine literarische Anthologie, takes place.

The Kunstpalais
As a new venue for contemporary art in Erlangen, the Kunstpalais opened in the Palais Stutterheim in 2010. With two solo exhibitions, one exhibition related to the Municipal Collection and one thematic exhibition each year relevant approaches in the international contemporary art scene are presented. The exhibitions are linked to contemporary discourses within and beyond the art world. Particularly, conceptual references are established to socio-political issues, literature, philosophy and film. Interdisciplinary accompanying programmes embed the artistic contents in a broad social level.
